Therapeutic Riding

We are excited to offer summer camp this year! Check under "Lessons & Camps" for more details!

We offer Canadian Therapeutic Riding Association Certified Therapeutic Riding by a Certified Intermediate Instructor! We are also a provisional member center meaning that we are required to maintain very high safety standards as regulated by CanTRA.

Therapeutic riding can help people with disabilities to improve their physical and mental health, emotional and social well-being and to reach their cognitive, behavioral and communicative goals while learning functional riding skills, which promotes independence and self esteem.

Some benefits of therapeutic riding are:

  • improvement of balance
  • mobilization of trunk and pelvis
  • reduced spasticity
  • improvement of gross and fine motor skills
  • development of coordination
  • strengthening of muscles
  • normalization of muscle tone
  • prevention of contractures
  • increased confidence and self esteem
  • improvement of attention span
  • promotion of independence
  • improvement of social integration
  • access to recreation, sport and/or competition

The movement of a horse's pelvis at the walk is very similar to the movement of the human pelvis at the walk. A rider experiences unimpeded repetitive pelvic motion similar to the pelvic motion of normal human gait, therefore, the horse's movement provides an invaluable method of training or retraining pelvic and trunk control. To date, no apparatus has been developed to replicate this movement.

Therapeutic Riding may be beneficial for the following disabilities:

  • Cerebral Palsy
  • CVA or stroke
  • Epilepsy
  • Hydrocephalus
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Spina Bifida
  • Spinal Code Injury
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Muscular Dystrophy
  • Autism
  • Down Syndrome
  • Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
  • Learning Disabilities
  • Arthritis
  • Visual and Hearing Impairments
  • Emotional disorders and more......

Each lesson is designed specifically for that rider (ages 3+) and can incorporate many skills/goals that other professional on their team may be working towards, on top of learning how to ride! Our lessons also include stable management (grooming & tacking up to the best of their ability) this is therapeutic in itself, improving independance, confidence, co-ordination and fine motor skills. The lessons are 30 or 60 minutes depending on the rider's age, attention span and physical ability..

Our therapeutic riding horses are amazing and have been specifically chosen for their temperment. They receive continued training for the utmost safety of our riders.

Riders are welcome to try an introductory lesson, thereafter, are required to register for a minimum of two months (1 lesson per wk=8 lessons). Lessons are available year round and you can start at anytime throughout the year based on availablity.

Private Lessons are $45.00 + gst=$47.25 (60 minutes)
                         $35.00 + gst=$36.75 (30 minutes)
